Fire Burns Carpenter Design in Rutherford County
A worker and a firefighter are injured when flames roar through a Rutherford County plant.
The blaze broke out Wednesday afternoon at the Carpenter Design plant just west of Rutherfordton off Highway 74.
The worker was burned while operating a mulching machine. He was flown to the burn center in Winston-Salem. His condition is not known at this time, but the plant's owner does not think his injuries are life-threatening.
One firefighter was treated at a local hospital for heat exhaustion. Several others were treated at the scene for smoke and heat-related problems.
The blaze is contained but crews will remain on the scene overnight, and say the fire could burn for days.
The owner hopes to reopen at about 50% capacity on Monday.
